Choosing your finish

Gold-plated, silver-plated, solid silver or steel: each finish has its strengths. Here is how to tell them apart.

3-micron gold-platedA thicker, 3-micron layer of goldRings and jewellery worn every daySame precautions, better resistance to rubbing

Gold plating is still a surface layer: the thicker it is, the longer it lasts. Take off your jewellery to wash, swim or apply perfume and cream.

Frequently asked questions

Choosing the right findings

Which finish should I choose for my findings?

For a warm gold and findings made in Europe, choose 24K fine-gold plated brass. For a ring or a piece worn every day, go for 3-micron gold plating. For a silver look, 925 silver-plated or solid 925 silver. For affordable everyday jewellery, stainless steel. Our finishes guide compares them.

What is the difference between 24K fine-gold plating and 3-micron gold plating?

Both are gold platings. 24K fine-gold plating gives a rich, deep gold. 3-micron gold plating applies a thicker layer of gold that better resists rubbing: it suits rings and jewellery worn every day.

Is stainless steel suitable for everyday jewellery?

Yes. Stainless steel is strong and durable: it won't rust or tarnish and suits most sensitive skin. It is the ideal range for affordable everyday jewellery. Discover our stainless steel selection.

Which tools do I need to get started?

Three pairs of pliers are enough for most projects: flat-nose pliers to open and close jump rings, round-nose pliers to form loops, and side cutters for head pins and wire. You will find them in our tools.

Which jump ring size should I choose?

Small 3 to 4 mm jump rings suit fine chains, clasps and small charms. For a heavier pendant or a thicker chain, choose a larger diameter. Always check that the ring fits through the chain link and the bail.

How do I open a jump ring without bending it out of shape?

Hold the ring with two pairs of pliers, one on each side of the opening, then twist one towards you and the other away from you. Never pull the two ends apart: the ring would not close properly. Close it with the same motion, in reverse.
