A little gemology : spinel is a magnesium and aluminum oxide (MgAl₂O₄) that crystallizes in the cubic system, in octahedra with sharp edges; its name may in fact come from the Latin spina, “thorn”. Hardness 8 on the Mohs scale, density about 3.6: it is harder than quartz and wears very well. Its pinks and reds are due to chromium, its mauves to iron. Long confused with ruby, it adorned the crowns of Europe under that name: the famous “Black Prince’s Ruby” in the British Imperial State Crown is in fact a spinel. The finest deposits are found in Myanmar (Mogok), Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Tajikistan, and Vietnam.
Good to know : natural spinel is one of the rare color gems that is generally untreated; its shades are those of the stone as it comes out of the mine. A soft cloth and lukewarm water are enough to care for it.
In lithotherapy : pink spinel is associated with the heart chakra. It is credited with virtues of vitality and renewal, and is said to help regain momentum after a period of fatigue.
