A little gemology: iolite is the commercial name for cordierite, named in honor of the French mineralogist P. L. A. Cordier. It is also called dichroite, “two colors”: its pleochroism is among the most pronounced in the mineral world, with the stone shifting from deep blue-violet to pale blue, even yellow, depending on the angle from which it is viewed.
