A little gemology: peridot is the gemstone variety of olivine, a magnesium iron silicate, (Mg,Fe)₂SiO₄, close to the forsterite end-member. It crystallizes in the orthorhombic system, has a hardness of 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, and a density of about 3.3. It is one of the rare idiochromatic gems: its color is due to the iron in its very formula, not to an impurity. That is why peridot exists only in green, from yellow-green to olive green, and is not treated. Its strong birefringence can be seen under a loupe: the edges of the back facets appear doubled. Formed in the Earth's mantle and brought up by volcanism, it has also been identified in certain meteorites. Current deposits are found notably in Pakistan, Myanmar, China, and the United States (Arizona); in antiquity, the Egyptians mined it on the island of Zabargad, in the Red Sea.
Note: peridot is sensitive to acids and sudden temperature changes. Clean it simply with lukewarm water and a soft cloth, without an ultrasonic bath.
