Four amazonite triangle beads, in a lagoon blue-green veined with fine white streaks. Hand-faceted, they retain a soft, milky matte finish that contrasts beautifully with the shine of metal.

Their summer color brightens a fringe necklace, a pair of pendants or a bracelet on a gold chain. The varied sizes in the lot make it possible to create a gradient, from the smallest to the largest. A little gemology: amazonite is the green variety of microcline, a potassium feldspar that crystallizes in the triclinic system. Hardness of 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale, density of about 2.6. Its color, long mysterious, is attributed to traces of lead and water in the crystal, activated by the natural radioactivity of rocks over the millennia. The white streaks are lamellae of albite, another feldspar. Despite its name, no deposit is known in the Amazon: it is found mainly in Brazil, Russia, Madagascar, Mozambique and the United States.

Good to know: like other feldspars, amazonite cleaves easily: avoid shocks and ultrasonic baths. It may also fade slightly with heat; store it away from direct sunlight.

In lithotherapy: amazonite is associated with the throat chakra and the heart chakra. It is credited with soothing properties and is said to encourage sincere communication.
