Frequently asked questions

All about earring findings

I have sensitive ears: which material should I choose?

Our Europe range findings in 24K fine-gold plated or 925 silver-plated brass are nickel-, lead- and cadmium-free, REACH compliant. Stainless steel is also suitable for sensitive skin. If you have a confirmed allergy, ask your doctor for advice.

What is the difference between a hoop and a leverback?

A hoop is a ring: its thin post slips into the other end to close it. A leverback closes with a small hinged clasp that clicks shut: the earring stays firmly in place, which makes it ideal for hanging a drop.

How do you open a jump ring without bending it out of shape?

Hold the jump ring with two flat-nose pliers, one on each side of the opening. Twist one pair of pliers towards you and the other away from you, without ever pulling the two ends apart. Close it with the same movement in reverse: the ring keeps its round shape.

Which findings should you choose for a heavy drop?

Go for an ear wire or a leverback, which carry the weight below the ear, rather than a stud. Attach the drop with a securely closed jump ring. The bigger the drop, the more comfortable it is to keep it light.

Which backs should I use with my stud earrings?

Many of our studs are listed as compatible with Perles Corner butterfly backs: the product page says so, along with the exact contents of the pack. Our butterfly backs come in packs of 10, in 24K fine-gold plated brass, 925 silver-plated brass or stainless steel.

24K fine-gold plated or stainless steel: which should you choose?

24K fine-gold plated brass (Gilded in Europe) has a warm, deep gold tone, for high-end creations. Stainless steel doesn’t rust or tarnish: it’s the affordable choice for everyday jewellery. The two ranges complement each other.
