Characteristics:
At this small size, spinel is ideal for layered bracelets, multi-row necklaces, and discreet earrings; a few beads are also enough to enhance a creation in gold beads or mother-of-pearl. With a hole of approximately 0.6 mm, plan on using fine nylon thread or a beading needle. For more presence, this same spinel is also available in 4 mm faceted rounds.
A bit of gemology: spinel belongs to a family of oxides that bears its name; the variety used in jewelry is a magnesium aluminate, crystallized in the cubic system. Its high refractive index and hardness of 8 on the Mohs scale give it remarkable brilliance and durability, with a density of about 3.6. The pink and raspberry shades of this strand come from traces of chromium, while the more mauve ones come from a little iron. Until the 19th century, before analyses were available, it was taken for a ruby: several historical "rubies" in the Crown Jewels of France and England are in fact spinels. It comes mainly from Asia (Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Tajikistan) and East Africa.
Good to know: spinel is generally neither heated nor dyed, which distinguishes it from many colored stones. Durable, it is easy to care for with a soft cloth.
