The 0.8 mm hole accommodates a 0.60 to 0.65 mm nylon thread in a single pass, a 0.35 mm one if the thread must pass through twice — a necklace with knots between the beads, for example — and 0.5 mm elastic for a bracelet.

A bit of gemology: strawberry quartz is a natural quartz whose color does not come from the crystal itself, but from what it contains: fine inclusions of iron oxides — hematite, lepidocrocite or goethite — in flakes and needles, which give it that speckled raspberry pink and those coppery highlights. Each bead shows a different scattering of inclusions. Hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale, like all quartz: a sturdy stone, suitable for everyday wear. Main deposits: Brazil, Madagascar, Mexico, Kazakhstan.
