Guide - How to Care for Your Jewelry

Here are a few tips for looking after your jewellery, cleaning it and restoring its shine.

The basic rules :

Metals oxidise over time, a common and perfectly normal phenomenon.
However, there are tips for looking after your jewellery and restoring its shine.

Here are a few storage and usage tips to delay the process and preserve your jewellery:

The first tip for avoiding oxidation is to store your jewellery in a case or fabric pouches. This will prevent oxidation by air and humidity. Avoid storing them in the bathroom.

Try to alternate the way you wear your jewellery and don't wear it all the time, as skin contact and perspiration can accelerate oxidation. So remember to remove your jewellery at night and during physical activity.

To give your jewellery a new lease of life, you can clean it specifically to remove any marks or tarnish. But we advise you to clean your jewellery every time you use it, using a soft microfibre cloth.

Cleaning brass :

 Soapy water or soft cloth:
On a daily basis, you can use a soft microfibre cloth and/or clean your jewellery with soapy water, which will remove dirt and restore its shine. Be careful to dry the jewellery properly.

 Le coca :
One of the most famous tricks! Immerse your jewellery in a container filled with Coke and rub gently. Finally, rinse with clean water and dry thoroughly. Use a soft microfibre cloth to restore the shine.

 Hot sauces and ketchup :
Yes, it may seem strange, but using hot sauces and ketchup can be very useful for removing certain marks or dulling the surface.
To do this, rub the part with the mixture, rinse with clean water, dry and wipe with a soft cloth.

 Toothpastes :
One of the most common tricks is to lightly scrub your jewellery with a toothbrush and toothpaste. As with any other cleaning, rinse and dry properly.

White vinegar and bicarbonate of soda:
If your jewellery is badly oxidised or contains traces of rust, you can make a very effective mixture.
To do this, mix half a glass of flour with a quarter of white vinegar. Add salt or a little bicarbonate of soda. Apply the mixture to the jewellery and leave for a few minutes. Rinse and dry thoroughly. Restore shine with a soft cloth.

Cleaning Zamak :

 Soapy water or soft cloth:
As with most metals, you can use a soft microfibre cloth on a daily basis and/or clean your jewellery with soapy water. Be careful to dry the jewellery properly.

 Spirits or Vitriol :
You can soak a soft cloth in methylated spirits or vitriol, then rub the area. Finally, rinse and dry thoroughly.

Cleaning gold and gold plating

Unlike other metals or plating, solid gold or gold-plated jewellery can become tarnished and less shiny, but will not change colour. To revive them, here are a few options.

  Toothpaste :
The best known for restoring radiance. Place a small amount of paste on a toothbrush, moistened with warm water, then scrub gently. Rinse and dry with a soft cloth.

 Special products :
Products for precious jewellery are the most effective and guarantee perfect cleaning. The process is the same: scrub with a damp brush, rinse and dry with a soft cloth.

 Dishwashing liquid :
This very simple technique is just as effective. Immerse the jewellery in a glass of hot water with washing-up liquid. Wait overnight, then rinse thoroughly before drying with a soft cloth.

Cleaning the money:

Silver can tarnish and turn black, but this is perfectly normal. It is also a guarantee that your jewellery contains solid silver.

 Toothpaste :
The best known for restoring radiance. Place a small amount of paste on a toothbrush, moistened with warm water, then scrub gently. Rinse and dry with a soft cloth.

 Ash:
This highly effective technique is also easy to use, provided you have a chimney!
Sprinkle with ash and scrub your jewellery with a small brush, then rinse thoroughly and dry with a soft cloth.

 Special products :
Products for precious jewellery are the most effective and guarantee perfect cleaning. The process is the same: scrub with a damp brush, rinse and dry with a soft cloth.

 Salt :
This method should only be used on very oxidised jewellery that does not contain stones or beads, and only as a last resort!
Place your jewellery in aluminium foil, sprinkle with salt and close the foil. Immerse it in a basin of hot water and wait 15 minutes. Be careful not to stand on it, as it will undergo a chemical reaction and smell faintly of sulphur. Then rinse and polish with a soft cloth.

 White vinegar or beer:
Immerse your jewellery in a glass of white vinegar, after a few hours (about 2 hours) take it out, rinse and wipe with a soft cloth.

This operation can be carried out with beer, in which case it should be left to soak overnight.

 Lemon:
Cut a lemon in half and rub the jewel against the pulp. Then polish with a soft cloth.

 Baking soda:
Dilute a little baking soda in water to form a paste. Rub the jewellery with this mixture and a damp toothbrush. Then rinse and polish with a cloth.
