How to make a loop on wire — the basic technique in creative jewelry
Making a clean, regular loop on a wire is the fundamental motion of jewelry assembly. Earrings, pendants, charms on bracelets — once you master this technique, you can create dozens of different designs.
Good news: it can be learned in a few minutes.

What you need
- A wire with a flat or round head (depending on your assembly)
- A bead or element to assemble
- Round-nose pliers
- Cutting pliers
That’s all. No complicated tools needed.
The technique in 4 steps
1. Thread the bead onto the wire
2. Bend the wire at 90° Using your fingers or flat pliers, bend the wire at a right angle just above the bead. This sharp bend is the key to a regular loop.
3. Cut the excess. Keep 8mm; this is the size for a discreet loop. If you need a larger loop for your project, adjust the length.
3. Form the loop Grab the end of the wire with your round-nose pliers; the stud should not extend beyond the pliers. Wrap the wire around the pliers, bringing the end toward the bead. You get a circle.

The detailed motion for perfect loops
The easiest way is to see it in action. We prepared a short video showing the exact movement, in slow motion.
Watch it once or twice, then try with a test wire and bead. After 3 or 4 tries, the motion becomes natural.
Common mistakes (and how to avoid them)
The loop isn’t round You’re probably squeezing too early or too low on the pliers. Place the wire at the tip of the round-nose pliers — try to make a smooth, single motion.
The loop doesn’t close properly The remaining wire is too long or too short. Aim for 8-10 mm above the bead. With practice, you’ll adjust to the millimeter.
The loop is crooked The initial 90° bend is not sharp enough. Take the time to clearly mark the angle before forming the loop.
With this technique, you can create...
- Dangling earrings (beads + hooks)
- Pendants on chains
- Charms for bracelets
- Elements for long necklaces
- Multi-bead cluster assemblies
This is the foundation — and it opens the door to many creations.
