Jewelry Guide - How to Care for Them?

Here are some tips to maintain your jewelry, clean them, and thus restore their shine.

The basic rules:

Metals oxidize over time; this phenomenon is common and perfectly normal.
However, there are tips to maintain your jewelry and restore their shine.

Here are some storage and usage tips to delay the process and thus preserve your jewelry:

The first advice to avoid oxidation is to store your jewelry in a case or fabric pouches. This will prevent oxidation from air and humidity. Avoid storing them in the bathroom.

Try to alternate wearing your jewelry and not have it on you all the time because contact with skin and sweat can accelerate oxidation. So remember to remove your jewelry at night and during physical activities.

To give your jewelry a second life, you can perform a specific cleaning to remove marks or tarnished appearance. But we recommend cleaning your jewelry after each use with a soft microfiber cloth.

Cleaning brass:

 Soapy water or soft cloth:
Daily, you can use a soft microfiber cloth and/or clean your jewelry with soapy water, which will remove dirt and restore shine. Be careful to dry the jewelry properly.

 Cola:
One of the most famous tips! Immerse your jewelry in a container filled with cola and gently rub. Finally, rinse with clear water and dry properly. Use a soft microfiber cloth to restore shine.

 Hot sauces and Ketchup:
Yes, it may seem strange but using hot sauces and Ketchup can be very useful to remove certain marks or surface tarnish.
For this, rub the piece with the mixture, rinse with clear water, dry, and rub with a soft cloth.

 Toothpaste:
One of the most common tips is to gently rub your jewelry with a toothbrush and toothpaste. As with other cleanings, rinse and dry properly.

 White vinegar and baking soda:
If your jewelry is very oxidized or has rust marks, you can make a very effective mixture.
For this, mix half a glass of flour with a quarter of white vinegar. Add salt or a little baking soda. Apply the mixture to the jewelry and let it sit for a few minutes. Rinse and dry properly. Restore shine with a soft cloth.

Cleaning Zamak:

 Soapy water or soft cloth:
As with most metals, you can use a soft microfiber cloth daily and/or clean your jewelry with soapy water. Be careful to dry the jewelry properly.

 Denatured alcohol or Vitriol:
You can soak a soft cloth with denatured alcohol or vitriol then rub the piece. Finally, rinse and dry carefully.

Cleaning Gold and Gold-plated

Unlike other metals or plating, Solid Gold or Gold-plated Jewelry can tarnish and become less shiny but will not change color. Here are different ways to restore them.

  Toothpaste:
The most well-known for restoring shine. Place some paste on a toothbrush, moistened with warm water, then gently rub. Finally rinse and dry with a soft cloth.

 Special products:
Products for precious jewelry will be the most effective and guarantee a perfect cleaning. The process will be the same: rub with a damp brush, rinse, then dry with a soft cloth.

 Dishwashing liquid:
Very simple, this technique is just as effective. Immerse the jewelry in a glass of hot water with dishwashing liquid. Wait overnight then rinse carefully before drying it with a soft cloth.

Cleaning silver:

Silver can tarnish and blacken but rest assured this phenomenon is completely normal. It is also a guarantee that your jewelry really contains solid silver.

 Toothpaste:
The most well-known for restoring shine. Place some paste on a toothbrush, moistened with warm water, then gently rub. Finally rinse and dry with a soft cloth.

 Ash:
Very effective, this technique is also simple to perform provided you have a fireplace!
Sprinkle with ash and rub your jewelry with a small brush, then rinse carefully and dry it with a soft cloth.

 Salt:
Be careful, this method should only be used on very oxidized jewelry, containing no stones or beads, and as a last resort!
Place your jewelry in a sheet of aluminum foil, sprinkle with salt and close the paper. Immerse everything in a basin of hot water and wait 15 minutes. Be careful not to stay above it because a chemical reaction will occur and a slight sulfur smell. Then rinse and polish with a soft cloth.

 White vinegar or Beer:
Immerse your jewelry in a glass of white vinegar, after a few hours (about 2h) take out the jewelry, rinse and wipe with a soft cloth.

This operation can be done with beer; in this case, let it soak overnight.

 Lemon:
Cut a lemon in half and rub the jewelry against the pulp. Then polish with a soft cloth.

 Baking soda:
Dilute some baking soda in water to form a paste. Rub the jewelry with this preparation and a damp toothbrush. Then rinse and polish with a cloth.
