It is one of the rare \u003cem\u003eidiochromatic\u003c\/em\u003e gems: its color is due to the iron in its very formula, not to an impurity. That is why peridot exists only in green, from yellow-green to olive green, and is not treated. Its strong birefringence can be seen under a loupe: the edges of the back facets appear doubled. Formed in the Earth's mantle and brought up by volcanism, it has also been identified in certain meteorites.
