Freshwater baroque pearls

Summer 2025: Fall for baroque mother-of-pearl beads

This season, baroque pearls are on everyone's lips (and every runway). Their unique irregular shape, somewhere between organic and sculptural, asserts a rebellious and authentic elegance. A very present trend on the spring/summer 2025 catwalks (Bottega Veneta, Chanel, Simone Rocha, McQueen), where these pearls appear strung or mounted as oversized pendants, a bold contrast to the sleek looks.

They symbolize an era where imperfection becomes a style asset: a shape perfectly in tune with the summer 2025 spirit—bold, natural, and expressive.

The history of freshwater pearls

Ancient Roots

Since antiquity, the pearl has been a symbol of refinement and spirituality. The first natural pearls were extracted from the Persian Gulf, India, and Sri Lanka. They were seen as spiritual symbols.

The Dawn of Cultured Freshwater Pearls

  • The first modern attempt to culture freshwater pearls took place in Japan, in Lake Biwa, in the late 1920s. From the 1930s, pearls made entirely of nacre, called "Biwa pearls", were cultivated and highly prized for their brilliance and unique colors. Then in the 1960s, farms in Lake Kasumigaura introduced non-nucleated "keshi" pearls via Hyriopsis schlegelii mussels.

  • From the 1980s-1990s, China established itself as the world's leading producer of cultured freshwater pearls, with varied shapes (semi-baroque, rice grain, round...), at an affordable price.

Natural formation and cultivation principle

Freshwater pearls come from mussels (Unionidae family) in lakes, rivers, or ponds. They are formed when a fragment of mantle is implanted, which triggers the secretion of nacre, forming pearls without a nucleus.

Baroque and freshwater pearls: characteristics and availability

Shape and style

Baroque pearls are characterized by their irregular shape—oval, asymmetrical, jagged, sometimes very expressive. They are particularly common among cultured freshwater pearls because they come from implantations without a spherical nucleus.

Cultured freshwater pearls are significantly more affordable and accessible than marine pearls (South Sea, Tahitian), while still allowing for very diverse designs.

Origin

  • Mainly China (Hunan, Jiangxi regions)

  • Historically produced in Japan, now limited

  • Some production in the United States, but marginal
